Playstation 5 Reveal Shows Promising Signs for Sony

Yesterday, the highly anticipated Playstation 5 reveal finally happened. We already know that the next generation of Xbox is launching in November, and we knew Playstation 5 was coming sometime this year. We had questions. What’s the price point? Are there two models and what are the differences? Am I going to be waiting 6 months for there to be a game worthy of buying a Playstation 5?

We asked, Sony delivered.

Playstation 5 will launch with two different models, with the only difference being the ability to play physical games

We won’t have to wait long for the Playstation 5. It is launching November 12th in North America, as well as in Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. The global release is November 19th.

Now, I’ll admit, the first thing I thought upon seeing this was, man, $100 for a disc drive? You’re not wrong to have that thought too. However, it’s become clear companies are trying to lower production costs by pushing consumers towards going all digital. I do suspect at some point maybe 10 years down the line physical production could stop of video games, but that’s a hot take for another day.

The key thing to remember is you aren’t forced to buy the $499 version. There are no system improvements by sticking with the digital only version. You’re essentially paying $100 more if you’re a physical game collector, someone who sells their games once you’re done with them or someone who likes to buy used games. When you consider those three options, the $100 seems like a difference you can earn back by selling games you’ve completed and have no intention to go back to, or by buying used games off people that may not be on sale on the Playstation store.

All in all, the price point is incredibly fair. You can get the next gen Xbox and Playstation 5 for right around $700 together. Remember, the Playstation 3 launched at $500 for the basic version. As gamers, we have been treated really well as Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony have all provided healthy competition for each other, which means better console prices for consumers. These companies all understand that they will take a loss on the hardware sales, their money maker is digital video game sales. Which is why my hot take is at some point in the distant future, they’ll save more by just no longer producing physical video games.

Let’s continue on. We know that the Playstation 5 is launching in two months. We know it’s a very fair price. What games will I get to play on it though? Is it going to collect dust for 9 months before I’m actually playing games on it?

Good news: Your Playstation 5 won’t collect dust. Immediately off the bat you will have access to Astro’s Playroom, Demon’s Souls, Destruction All Stars, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy A Big Adventure. What stands out right away is two stand-out launch titles on Demon’s Souls and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

The beautiful remaster of Demon’s Souls will arrive on Playstation 5 immediately at launch

This was a bit of a shocker, to be honest. Generally I expect systems to launch with nothing to play, or some sort of filler party type game that acts more as a borderline prototype to the system. That isn’t to bash Wii Sports, it was incredibly fun, but that’s sort of the experience I expect when a system launches. If you look at the Playstation 4 list of launch titles, I’ll take the PS5 launch titles over that. To begin the Playstation 5 with the overlooked Dark Souls-esque gameplay pioneer as a remaster is an absolute treat.

You’ll get to swinging right when the Playstation 5 launches with Marvel’s Spiderman: Miles Morales

For fans of the Spiderman series, you’re not going to be missing out either. Miles Morales will web into your hearts on PS4 and PS5 on November 12th as a launch title as well! Continue the journey as Miles Morales, friend of the beloved Peter Parker as he looks to be the hero of Harlem and defend the city from a gang war.

If you’re like me and a lot of other gamers, you’ve encountered this new problem as we grow older: We now have money to buy any game we want, but now we don’t have the time to play all the games we want. Your backlog has probably built up. You probably have a library of games or a want list of games that you want to play. Well, COVID-19 has brought on a not-pleasant reason for you to go through a bunch of games you missed, right? Regardless the reason, you’re in luck.

Familiarize yourself with the list of iconic Playstation 4 games that will be available on launch for the Playstation 5 through Playstation Plus.

The list of games includes: God of War, Bloodborne, Monster Hunter World, Final Fantasy XV, Mortal Kombat X, Fallout 4, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Ratchet & Clank, Days Gone, Until Dawn, Detroit: Become Human, Battlefield 1, Infamous: Second Son, Batman: Arkham Knight, The Last Guardian, The Last of Us: Remastered, Persona 5 and Resident Evil 7: Biohazard

If you missed some of these games no matter the reason, this will certainly provide a great addition alongsidethe Playstation 5 launch titles.

Playstation Plus features iconic Playstation 4 games ready for you to replay or dive into for the first time upon the launch of the Playstation 5

What’s one of the most iconic and influential RPG series of all time? What series has tugged at the heartstrings of gamers for decades, and at times even provided us with, uhh.. laughter? Final Fantasy. We got our first ever look at Final Fantasy 16. There was no release date announced, but we got to see some of the story details, a look at the action combat as well as a refreshing appearance of Final Fantasy going back to an older medieval style similar to Final Fantasy 9. (Objectively the best Final Fantasy, of course.)

There have been multiple Final Fantasy games where I have shed tears. It isn’t a Final Fantasy without a tragic story that gets you invested in it with fun gameplay and an amazing soundtrack. What makes Final Fantasy 16 even more appealing is the fact that the Final Fantasy 14 team is playing a role in making it. Some would argue despite Final Fantasy 14 being an MMORPG, that it may be the best game in the entire series. The story they have drawn out with that world and the way they revived what was literally a dead game into one of the bet MMORPG’s and one of the best Final Fantasy games ever is a feat that should not be overlooked. To have them helping with a fully single player driven experience could make this the best game in the series, and I can’t wait to learn even more about it

Final Fantasy made it’s debut during the Sony Playstation 5 Live stream, but currently has no release date attached to it

Do you like Magic? Do you like a fantasy that isn’t necessarily final? Welcome to Hogwarts Legacy. It launches next year for Playstation 5, PC and Xbox Series X, but was shown during the Playstation 5 reveal livestream. During their press release, Warner Bros. described the game as an “open-world, single-player, action role-playing video game set in the 1800s wizarding world,” where “players will experience life as a student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry like never before, as they live the unwritten and embark on a dangerous journey to uncover a hidden truth of the wizarding world.”

If it sounds familiar, it’s because the game leaked on Reddit nearly two years ago, but no one knew further details. It looked amazing back then, and all we could wonder was how long we would wait until we finally saw the game. We now got that answer. The world of Hogwarts is one that has not been represented too well through video games, and this finally looks like it’ll be a game worthy of the Hogwarts world and without pushing rehashed stories that we already know about Harry Potter. Getting to be a new part of Hogwarts instead of just playing as Harry Potter through Hogwarts is a decision I’m glad they went with. We don’t know the specific release date yet, but this is a game to certainly keep an eye on.

There were other games shown in this reveal as well, but it would take far too long to cover ever single game and detail. So let me leave you with the final game we’ll take about. It was the finale, and it was worth saving what little we got to see of it for the end.

You won’t have to wait long to continue your journey as the long time beloved star of the God of War series, Kratos. In a shocking finale reveal, In 2021 we will be yet playing a new God of War title. The developers had mentioned it wouldn’t be as long of turnaround to get the next game out, and they weren’t wrong. While there is no official release date in 2021, just the fact it is coming out next year has blown the tops off the internet.

Continue as Kratos in Ragnarok in 2021

The Playstation 5 reveal and launch in my opinion will be a smashing success. We got to see a quality list of launch titles for the Playstation 5, as well as an opportunity for those to complete their backlog of iconic Playstation 4 games through Playstation Plus as we await even more new titles. The price point is very fair for 2020. and the games that we saw are reasons to be excited as the next generation of console gaming is truly kicking off.
